Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw
The macaw with gold and blue is a stunning bird. Its stunning appearance is well-known. Its social nature makes it a wonderful companion for families. It also excels at interaction and can pick up phrases and tricks quickly.
Our own blue and gold macaw, Pteri, can say hello with water, apple and much more. They are able to live for more than 50 years.
Lolita's Personality
Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are friendly and intelligent. These birds are best suited to families with a variety of members. They can get bored easily and find different ways to entertain themselves if their owners aren't interacting with them enough. If they are not socialized properly macaws can become aggressive and can even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw does not feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds who enjoy playing, climbing and play. They must spend at least 2 to 3 hours every day outside to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. They love playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They also love going to the playgrounds and parks while hiking, and also visiting local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a fun pet, they also make wonderful pets for children.
Despite their adoring nature they are loud and can be a nuisance for those living near. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be disruptive in condos and apartments or near children who might be startled by their roar.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only way to determine sex. Once sex is known pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to master commands, phrases and tricks. It is a lengthy process and the pet's owner must be patient and realize that this is a challenging task. Positive reinforcement can help speed up the process, and correct any behavioral issues.
Lolita's care
For years, activists have been pleading for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to return to the ocean.
Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They harm her health by forcing Lolita to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as a relative and plan to eventually move her to the open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the rest of her days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.
Lolita's Training

Lolita San Miguel wanted to continue Joe Pilates' dream that everyone could practice his method. To accomplish this, she developed her own teacher training program, which is the most complete currently available. This is her Legacy (tm). The first stage of the training is System I. System II builds upon the foundations introduced in System 1 with exercises on equipment. It also introduces teachers to exercises that use the Spine Corrector, Magic Circle, Foam Rollers and Bars. This module comes with an instructional manual and DVD of Lolita teaching the system for personal practice.
After you have completed Lolita's Teacher Education Program you will be ready to teach The Pilates Method anywhere on the globe! This course will allow you to perform your job professionally, safely and efficiently with clients. You will gain an understanding of the various exercises and their interactions. You will be able to apply this knowledge to any body part to help your clients feel confident and secure. Lolita's Legacy produces open-minded teachers who have a deep understanding of the Pilates Method and outstanding teaching skills. Lolita's Diet
A balanced diet is essential for the health of a gold and blue macaw. These beautiful birds require high-quality food and plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. In captivity, a well-fed macaw can expect to live for up to 60 years. Additionally, this magnificent bird requires plenty of room to move around and exercise.

The Miami Seaquarium has released a series of information about Lolita's health, and her status but there are still questions. Certain experts, like Akromas, who trained or oversaw Lolita's care at some point, have voiced concerns about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats 115 pounds of salmon, herring, capelin, and squid daily.
The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they offer their killer whales, particularly Lolita. The 57-year old orca was removed from Puget Sound, Washington, in the year 1970. Although the species is threatened and is in a tank which some believe is too small.
Lolita's Health
While her beauty is undeniable However, her health continues to get worse. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and wish to see her released back into nature. Lolita has been a resident at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and was an attraction for tourists for many years. She has been battling chronic illnesses and a debilitating illness that has left her in a fragile state.
The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information regarding the condition of Lolita. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. They show that she is ageing quickly and that her health is declining.
Since harlequin macaw doesn't have to disclose this information, it is unclear which specific health issues the orca is suffering from. However, a repository of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the death of orcas in captivity.
Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita, many people are hopeful that she may be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has stated his commitment to transfer the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.
After years of pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean where she can swim deep in the water and possibly even be being reunited with her mother orca. These plans came too late to save the beloved whale that passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney problem.
