Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality

They can easily become bored and find ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't engaging with them enough often. If they aren't socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and may even bite. It is important that boundaries are clearly established so that the macaw does not feel threatened.
In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who love to play, climb and play. They must spend at least two to three hours every day outside for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They love playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. They love going to playgrounds and parks as well as hiking, local restaurants and bars. In addition to being a fun pet they also make wonderful pets for children.
These birds can be very loud, despite their love for their mate. They can also be a nuisance to people living near. They can be heard making high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be a nuisance in apartments and condos or in close proximity to children who might be scared by their roar.
Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic which means that males and females are hard to tell apart. For this reason, DNA testing is the only reliable method of determining the sex. Once sex has been determined pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to master commands and phrases. Lolita's care
For years activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita could suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to return to the sea.
The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They are a danger to her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her an ancestor, on a plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast, where she could live for the rest of her days and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen could be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean itself, not an actual concrete tank.
If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her departure from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Health

After years of pressure from PETA and others, the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary at the sea where she can take a deep dive in the ocean, perhaps even reunited with her orca mother. The plans were not enough to save the whale who died on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney problem.
